Q.16 What is an earthquake zone? Name two areas in India that are highly seismic.
2Answer: The weak zones on the earth’s crust where earthquakes are more likely to occur are called seismic zones or fault zones. Two highly seismic areas in India are Kashmir and Rann of Kutch.
Short Answer Type Questions (Q.17 to 22)
Instructions- Answer the following questions in 30-40 words. Each question carries 3 marks.
Q.17 Write any three characteristics of an ideal fuel.
31. It should have a high calorific value.
2. It should be cheap, readily available, and easy to transport.
3. It should burn smoothly without producing harmful gases or leaving unwanted residue.
Q.18 How is the rate of rainfall affected by deforestation?
3Answer: Trees release a lot of water vapor into the atmosphere through transpiration, which helps in cloud formation. Deforestation reduces the number of trees, leading to less water vapor in the air. This disrupts the water cycle and significantly reduces the rate of rainfall.
Q.19 What is reproduction? What are the methods of reproduction in animals?
3Answer: Reproduction is the biological process by which living organisms produce new individuals of their own kind, ensuring the continuation of their species. There are two main methods of reproduction in animals: Sexual reproduction (involving male and female gametes) and Asexual reproduction (like budding or binary fission).
Q.20 Write any three changes that occur in boys during adolescence.
31. Sudden increase in height.
2. Voice becomes deeper and harsh due to the growth of the voice box (Adam’s apple).
3. Growth of facial hair (mustache and beard) and hair on other body parts.
Q.21 Paheli went to the railway station with her parents for a train journey. There, the porter placed their luggage his head. Paheli noticed that the porter wrapped a cloth around his head while carrying heavy loads. Why did the porter do this?
3Answer: The porter wraps a round piece of cloth on his head to increase the area of contact between the heavy luggage and his head. Since pressure is inversely proportional to the area (Pressure = Force/Area), an increase in area reduces the pressure on the head, making it comfortable to carry the heavy load.
Q.22 What is done to make jewellery shine?
3Answer: To make jewellery shine, a process called electroplating is used. In this process, a thin layer of a shiny and expensive metal (like gold or silver) is deposited over less expensive or dull metals using an electric current. Polishing is also done to restore the shine.
Long Answer Type Questions (Q.23 to 26)
Instructions- Answer the following questions in 70-80 words. Each question carries 5 marks.
Q.23 Write five uses of microorganisms that are useful in our lives.
51. Making curd and cheese: Bacteria like Lactobacillus promote the formation of curd from milk.
2. Baking industry: Yeast is widely used for making bread, pastries, and cakes as it helps the dough rise.
3. Commercial production: Yeast is used for the large-scale production of alcohol, wine, and acetic acid (vinegar).
4. Medicines: Many microorganisms are used to manufacture antibiotics (e.g., Penicillin) and vaccines.
5. Environment cleaning: Certain bacteria decompose organic waste (like dead plants and animal remains) into harmless substances, keeping the environment clean.
Q.24 What is friction? Justify the statement that friction is harmful but essential.
5Answer: Friction is a force that opposes the relative motion between two surfaces in contact with each other.
Why it is essential: Friction is necessary for our day-to-day activities. Without friction, we would not be able to walk without slipping, vehicles could not stop even if brakes were applied, and we wouldn’t be able to write with a pen or hold objects in our hands.
Why it is harmful: It is harmful because it causes wear and tear of materials, such as the soles of our shoes or the moving parts of machines. It also wastes a lot of energy in the form of heat, reducing the efficiency of machines. Hence, friction is considered a necessary evil.
Q.25 Explain the amplitude, time period and frequency of vibration.
51. Amplitude: The maximum displacement of a vibrating body from its central (mean or resting) position is called its amplitude. It determines the loudness of a sound.
2. Time Period: The time taken by a vibrating or oscillating body to complete one full oscillation is called its time period. It is measured in seconds (s).
3. Frequency: The number of oscillations or vibrations completed by a vibrating body in one second is called its frequency. Its SI unit is Hertz (Hz). For example, if a pendulum oscillates 20 times in 1 second, its frequency is 20 Hz.
Q.26 Explain regular and irregular (diffused) reflection with the help of diagram.
